Spatial and Temporal Variations
Variations on a two-part melody for soprano and tenor recorder. In the variations, aspects of space and time are transformed. Each variation builds on the previous one.
The video above depicts the final variation only. The video below has all the variations in order (see the time stamps).
Headphones are recommended.
- The original two-part melody (00:00)
- The melody with the individual notes (as sounds) dispersed throughout a 64m wide, 32m deep area in front of the listener (00:33)
- The melody played in three simultaneous tempi, with the sounds again spread throughout the before-mentioned area (01:07)
- The area, which was formerly acoustically non-reflective, becomes an enclosed space with reflective surfaces (03:17)
- The onset times of all the sounds are randomly distributed throughout a time span of 128s (05:29)
- The sounds move throughout the physical space, with occasional changes in pitch due to Doppler shift (07:44)
- Delay with feedback is added to the sounds, resulting in discernible echoes (9:59)
