Induction-Transduction

When an electrical current flows through a conductor, a magnetic field is created around the conductor. When a conductor is placed in a changing magnetic field, an electrical current is induced in the conductor. Using these principles, varying voltage was induced in the conductor of a coil pickup placed within the fluctuating magnetic field of various electronic devices. A portable recorder connected to the coil pickup was used to capture these voltage changes, which were then used as audio signals. These audio signals were composed, amplified, and then transduced into mechanical vibrations to create a three-dimensional, navigable sound world.

We are likewise “inductors”: when we listen to the changing sound sources, emotion is induced within us, which emotion is transduced into action. In this piece, there may be a variety of emotions induced, but my hope is that it will ultimately be an uplifting experience transduced into positive action.

Technical note: Induction-Transduction can be rendered in N-channels, depending on the capacity of the venue. The channel ordering can be in any order. Ideally, the audience members are able to move freely among the loudspeakers. The piece can also be encoded in Ambisonics (up to seventh order). The example above is a binaural rendering of third-order Ambisonics.
